AIR traffic investigators will assess a collision between two aircraft at Melbourne Airport which saw a Virgin and Jetstar jet crash into each other.
“Two aircraft made contact while taxiing at Melbourne Airport, (the) incident occurred at approximately 9.30am,” airport spokesman Matt Francis said.
“The incident involved an aircraft pushing back from its gate for departure, and an aircraft which was holding for a gate.”
There were no passenger or air personnel injured in the incident which was attended by five emergency response vehicles
Passenger Luke Grima, 45, of Bentleigh, said both aircraft suffered "serious damage".
"It was as if we ran over something ... oh my God, we've just hit another plane," Mr Grima said after being disembarked.
"When we looked out the wing, we could just see the end of the wing had come off and the other Jetstar plane has got some pretty serious damage to its rear."
Passengers were evacuated and given food vouchers.
One aircraft was reversing out of Bay 1 and hit another plane, with the impact leaving debris on the tarmac.
"We can confirm a stationary Jetstar Airbus A320 was struck by a Virgin Australia aircraft this morning around 9am at Melbourne Airport," Jetstar spokeswoman Emma Kearns said.
"There were no passengers onboard the Jetstar aircraft and the collision occurred as the Virgin aircraft pushed back from its gate.
"Our engineering team is assessing the aircraft, which is expected to be taken out of service for several days while it is repaired."
Airport operations are continuing normally but passengers should contact their airline for an update on flight status.
The 9.35am flight VA1507 to Maroochydore was involved in the incident.
The Australian Transport Safety Bureau are investigating the accident.
