Tractor-trailer, armored car collide in Norfolk

Two people in an armored car were taken to a hospital this morning after the vehicle collided with a tractor-trailer and both vehicles hit the Carroll Trucking building in the 6300 block of Tidewater Drive.

The driver and passenger were taken to a hospital to be checked and no other injuries were reported, according to Norfolk Fire-Rescue. Another armored car was brought to the scene to transport money inside the one that crashed.
Police said both vehicles were headed north. The tractor-trailer was about to turn right when it swung wide. The armored car came up on the right side in its blind spot and the two collided. The collision sent the vehicles into the building. The amount of damage to the building was unknown.
A hazardous materials team was called to clean up a diesel spill from the tractor-trailer and a wrecker was called to remove the rig from the building. The northbound lanes were expected to be closed until the process was completed. The southbound lanes are open.
The driver of the tractor-trailer was given a summons charging him with making an improper right turn, said police spokesman Chris Amos.
"This is just a good reminder to everyone, tractor-trailers have blind spots so be careful as you approach one from behind as it’s turning right or left," Amos said. "They will be in a position where they will not see you and something like this could happen."
